Overview: Technological impacts on the context and on design
Technology, information, and visual form have – and have had – a symbiotic relationship with one another. One simple example is the invention of moveable type, which allowed law, information, andknowledge to be stable, shared, and spread. Today's conditions of highly advanced media technology present compelling challenges for the tools designers will use to design, but more importantly, what will be designed for the way people get and use information today and how that information will be used and attained. Design and technology are like horse and carriage or like chicken and egg. Our next readings will purvey a small but extremely relevant and provocative array of ideas and information about technological change and a consideration of its impacts.
